Is there a government for the people or just a Power full American Mafia?

well I thought the government was to assist the people not run them. This is what I see: they tax you to take care of you and don't. They install fear upon all and let us get attacked. and they play with Our money, loose it, and give it away with out consent and most of all if you don't like it they send you to jail on some trumped up charges
