How do I sue a company in another state?

I shipped a product to NY to be repaired. The product was damaged during the returned shipping. All damage was noted on shipping bill. Shipping company claims no fault. The repair facility claims no fault. I would like to take both the shipping company as well as the repair company to court. Value is $1600. Advertised on the internet. Go to local small claims or hire lawyer and go to district court?
